PDF File Size Too Large? Here is How to Fix It
Why PDFs get large
Four main causes: high-resolution embedded images, scanned pages (each page is a full image), embedded font files, and unoptimised export settings from Word or InDesign.
Method 1: PDF compression tool
1. Open the Compress PDF tool. 2. Upload your PDF. 3. Choose compression: Light removes metadata, Medium recompresses images (40 to 70 percent reduction), High applies aggressive compression. 4. Download.
Method 2: Re-export from source
If you have the original Word, InDesign, or PowerPoint file, re-export with web-optimised settings. In Word: Save As PDF, choose Minimum size for online publishing. This gives the best result without any generation loss.
Method 3: Split large PDFs
Divide a 50-page document into five sections. Smaller sections often share better than one large compressed file.
Size targets
Email: under 10 MB. Website download: under 2 MB. WhatsApp: under 16 MB limit. Mobile reading: under 5 MB.
What not to do
Never recompress a PDF that has already been compressed — degradation compounds. Never compress originals of legal or archival documents.
FAQ
Why is my 1-page PDF 10 MB? Almost certainly a high-resolution scanned image. Use Medium or High compression.
Will compression affect text quality? No. PDF compression only recompresses embedded images. Vector text is unaffected.
